Tchórzewski: no decision on nuclear power plant yet

In response to the media reports and questions to the Ministry of Energy on the construction of a nuclear power plant, the ministry informed no decision had been made yet.

„I have stressed that numerous times and I am doing this yet another time that the construction of a nuclear power plant in Poland was one of the scenarios for the future of the Polish energy sector and Polish energy mix, which we are seriously analyzing at the ministry. At the same time, I would like to stress that so far we have not made any final decision on the matter,” minister Tchórzewski explained.

He also pointed to the fact that a decision on such an investment had to be approved by the government.

„But we have not made it yet,” he said.

The minister also stressed that there were very serious arguments for the construction of a nuclear power plant in Poland. One of them is the fact that this is a zero emissions technology.

„A modern coal-fired generation sector guarantees us energy security for years. However, when designing various versions of the energy mix we have to consider issues related to EU requirements on limiting carbon dioxide emissions,” the minister pointed out.

„This is why our energy mix should include a stable zero emissions source. Undoubtedly, a nuclear power plant is one,” he stressed.

Minister Tchórzewski also pointed out that the ministry and the market were following the technological propositions that were popping up.

„We are analyzing and looking into various solutions, which is why our specialists have conducted study tours to China, Korea, Sweden and the United States,” he reminded.

Additionally, he also stated that the company PGE EJ1 was conducting environmental studies at two locations in the pomorskie voivodeship: „Lubiatowo-Kopalino” (Choczewo district) and „Żarnowiec” (Krokowa and Gniewino districts). „The possible location of the investment – if a decision on its implementation is made – will be chosen after the studies are completed. Currently, we are not considering any other locations for Poland’s first nuclear power plant,” he stressed.
